Hotty Totty

July 28, 2008

Oxford is a strange variation of the college town blended with Old South structures. We played a cool, smallish venue called Two Stick, just off the Square-a town square in the shadow of a looming white courthouse that doesn’t keep it from being overrun with drunken undergraduates after dark. We spent the afternoon in Square Books, one of the country’s best independent bookstore-Brea reading a book of poetry and talking to Gregg about the Butterfly Effect; Gregg talking to the staff about Bret Easton-Ellis’s American Psycho and me reading Leonard Cohen’s early mythological poetry. Fun right? We met some great people at the store who talked to us about the local scene (which included Fat Possum records, home of Andrew Bird and Colour Revolt), a radio show the store hosts called Thacker Mountain Radio which plays in the prisons, and why our wandering led to no wifi fruits…

Our show was really great and the band we are doing a two-night stint with were phenomenal. Check them out online-Wooden Finger. Friends and family were in attendance as well as a solid college crowd and our response was exceptional. Definitely a place we’ll return to later; if for nothing else other than the bookstore and Ajax Southern Sweet Tea (Thanks to Jessica Jarvis for the detailed food itinerary!).

On to Jackson…
